The Voices, Opportunities & Choices Employment Club (VOCEC) in partnership with Providence Care Hospital exists to create jobs for people living with mental illness. There’s clear evidence that work is critical to recovery, yet up to 90% of people living with severe, persistent mental illness remain unemployed.
To achieve its mission, VOCEC operates a series of small businesses. Current businesses include:
At The Lake Café
Located on the main level of Providence Care Hospital, At the Lake Café offers patrons homemade sandwiches, soups, salads, baked goods, locally roasted coffee and weekly specials to more than 400 patrons a day. The café additionally offers catering packages for small-to-medium sized groups.
Holding contracts with major international corporations, we assemble, label, package and ship millions of component parts every year.
Hands On Car Wash
The Hands On Car Wash has offered top-notch service and prices to its customers for more than two decades. Our packages include a full range of interior and exterior detailing services, including hand wash/dry, waxing/sealing, clay baring, as well as leather, dash and tire treatments.
Shared Support Services Southeastern Ontario (3SO) provides supply chain services to healthcare organizations in our region, including Providence Care Hospital, Kingston General Hospital and Hotel Dieu. Each week, VOCEC assists 3SO with the cleaning and sterilization of more than 100 inter-office shipping containers
Breaking Ground Café
Located at the YMCA of Kingston, Breaking Ground Café offers locally-roasted Cooke’s Coffee, tea, cold drinks and freshly-made baked goods, soup, sandwiches, salads and snacks. It also provides nutritious meals to the YMCA daycare.
VOCEC has teamed up with the Goodway Thrift Store on Division Street to help sort through its thousands of donations. VOCEC’s Montreal Street warehouse is now the Goodway’s main storage and sorting facility.
Food Sharing Project
VOCEC has partnered with the Food Sharing Project to help sort and organze food to be sent out to all the schools in the Kingston area. By doing this we help gurantee that children will always have a healthy meal to sustain their needs throughout the day.
